South Somerset Music Spectacular

Production / Case Studies / South Somerset Music Spectacular

Established for over 25 years, the South Somerset Music Spectacular is one of the region’s best known educational performance events. Bringing together children from primary schools right across the area, the event now takes place over two evenings providing a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their talents.

With the closure last year of Westlands Leisure Complex, many local events have been forced to find alternative venues. And as one of the leading Audio and Visual providers in the area, Revolution Audio has seen significant growth as we expand our network of customers. As local event organisers have found new venues, our team of Production Managers and Engineers have committed to work closely with clients to help bring their event ideas to life through Audio, Lighting and Video.

When the Music Spectacular moved to The GateWay in the heart of Yeovil, it signalled a new chapter for the event with significant changes in some of the organisation aspects of the event. And with this came the opportunity to look at new and exciting technical offerings.
Starting on the Audio side, we knew that with the sheer variety of performances ranging from vocal trios to orchestras that flexibility was absolutely crucial.

Revolution Audio’s Front of House Engineer Joel Nichols deployed a Midas M32 Digital Console and DL32 I/O Box, and around this put together a Festival Patch list to cater for all demands. A large variety of microphones to capture a wide range of different sources were positioned on either side of the stage, while handy cue sheets for the Somerset Music’s Stage Crew assisted them in making sure the right microphones were always in the right place, and at the right time.

Given the nature of the music, overhead micing was set to play a large part in the setup. We deployed pairs of Audix ADX-51s, AKG C451s and Rode NT5s around the stage. Each chosen for a specific source type based on their pickup and frequency response characteristics. Combined with Audix models for Drums, Sennheiser for Percussion and a selection of Shure models for Instruments, as well as four Sennheiser Handheld Radio Systems, we amply handled all the demands given to us.

We also provided major enhancements to the standard lighting stock fitted in the venue. With the rig consisting of only a pair of Fresnels and a selection of PAR 64s, something much more flexible was required, while still being cost-effective for the client. Revolution Audio Lighting Designer Noah Peet utilised four Chauvet Rogue R2 Wash Fixtures as the main fixture for his effects; with their punchy output and flexible zoom range from 11 to 49 degrees, they proved the ideal fixture for the task, allowing movements ranging from a wide sweeping wash, to a tight beam clearly punching through haze generated by a Unique 2.1 unit positioned on stage.

To compliment the range of colours produced by the R2 Units as part of our design, we also deployed four Showtec Spectral M800 Tour LED Fixtures. These produced a convincing overall colour wash and work effectively with a trio of ETC Source 4 Junior Units for spotting individual performance areas.
Lighting control was achieved using Chamsys MagicQ PC Software with a PC Wing attachment.

Finally, we also provided live video relay to the venue’s screen using a Sony HDRFX7 Camera, giving all parents a clear view of the children. And to meet the requirements for larger backstage areas, we deployed pipe and drape on both sides of the stage, helping to create not only clear stage wings, but also an effective movement system to help keep changeovers between schools fast.

The event was another shining example of Revolution Audio’s ability to bring together all the technical elements required to bring a successful, cohesive event together, as well as our commitment to working closely with all our clients to meet and exceed their expectations. This year’s Music Spectacular has been described as a “roaring success”, and we look forward to working closely with the team for years to come.
